Helping Japanese People Learn English is My Specialty
All other nationalities are welcome too!
I taught English conversation to Japanese executives, and other Japanese clients in New York in the 90s. I have also worked with clients from many countries besides Japan but, most of my work has been done with Japanese clients. And, trust me, there are special issues with teaching Japanese people.
What I found with my Japanese clients is that, it’s not about vocabulary or grammar. It’s about cultural expectations. Most Japanese people have studied enough English vocabulary and grammar, and most Japanese students of English can’t believe that.
Many of my Japanese clients studied English for more than 5 years. They knew hundreds of words.
But, they were not comfortable with English because of perfectionism and insecurity.
I understand insecurity and perfectionism with language learning.
When I was 16 I was a foreign exchange student in Sweden. I learned the language quite well but I made myself very shy in that language despite my abilities. I was a perfectionist about the pronunciation and grammar and my perfectionism paid off when it came to my level of Swedish. But, I was nervous and uncomfortable despite speaking at an almost native speaker level.

* I do not speak Japanese. I do speak Swedish, French and German so, I know how to learn a language. I know what it’s like to be the student and that gives me another perspective as I teach.
